Brace for impact as spage-age style invades your home

If our homes are a direct reflection of the national mood, the current vogue for futuristic lighting must mean we're all yearning for some serious intergalactic escapism.

Rather than nodding to history or a particular material, the interiors scene is currently in the grip of a sci-fi fever dream with lighting leading the charge. From standout pendants to floor-standing luminaires, decorative table-top lamps to functional desk additions, out-of-this-world styling is adding fun and futuristic whimsy to the most up-to-date homes. For inspiration look for anything that feels cosmic, a little bit retro, with a welcome dose of humour.

With their funky shapes and eye-catching finishes, they might just transport you to another realm entirely.

Heading into orbit

Sputnik-style, these ceiling pendant lights have been out roaming in space, and now they’re coming in to land. Look out for glassy, swirly details, served up with high-shine metallic-finishes.  In terms of scale it’s a case of ‘the bigger the better’, because the larger the space-themed pendant light, the more fantastical and ‘wow’ it appears.

Invading your tables

Bring on the discovery of other life forms if they look this friendly. Planting themselves firmly on table tops, these little lamps are easy to move around and try in different areas at home – because they are so ‘out there’ they’ll create a striking contrast (in a good way) with your existing furniture and lighting. Remember, this lighting look isn’t about blending in…

Colourful, cute, and curvaceous, here are two of our favourite fantastical table lamps. They’re designed to look appealing from every angle.

Freestanding rockets

Standing svelte, these slender beauties are both decorative and functional. Looking like mini satellite stations, they’re guaranteed to provide a beacon of light to any black hole.

While the West Elm 5 Light Floor Lamp looks like it’s carrying little frosted glass pillows of cloud formations, the Skipper Floor Lamp (a design by Tom Raffield) looks truly cosmic with its swirls of delicate wood wrapping around the light source in the centre.

Space stations

Fantastical lighting is even set to reach our 9 to 5 desktops. Not only will one of these bring a smile to your working week, it will also give your desk that contemporary design edge that you’ve been searching for.

Many of us seek out items which have a dual purpose and the Hector lamp doubles up as a wireless charger, saving you some desk space. These amazing lights don’t just brighten your workspace they also brighten your day, looking like fun pieces of sculpture that distract and delight.
